Welcome to lochaber - things to do

ice factor

Welcome to Lochaber You will be spoilt for choice for Things to do in Lochaber and Fort William! Imagine your ideal adventure playground with activities, challenges and surprises around every corner. Now imagine the playground covers 2,000 square miles. You have just pictured Lochaber and Fort William.

Lochaber is also home to the tallest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis, which provides walks, ice climbs, rock climbs and scrambles for people of all different abilities. Ben Nevis’s climate can often be cloudy and cool, so it is important to bring appropriate clothing and equipment if you’re hoping to get to the summit. Guides are also available for walking on Ben Nevis and lots of other mountain walks in the area.

For the energetic there’s white-water raftingmountain biking to skiing, and more leisurely pursuits like golf & fishing, there’s so much for you to choose from!

With some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, Lochaber is a great place for scenic walks and to visit historic landmarks such as Old Inverlochy Castle or the Commando Memorial. Moreover, the more pop-culturally aware should not be able to resist a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, which travels over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct made even more iconic after appearing in four Harry Potter films carrying the beloved Hogwarts Express.

For Outlander fans a visit to Fort William museum is esencial – Fans of the Outlander books and TV series are making our Museum a ‘must see’ destination to learn more about the world of the Jacobites that Claire Randall found herself sharing with Jamie Fraser in 1743.  We are pleased about that and know we can give them an excellent insight.  As a guide we have  produced this Outlander leaflet.

Join us live online for a four week block of seasonal Zen Yoga classes for spring suitable for all abilities. Classes begin on Wednesday March 25th at 6.30pm. Each class will last one hour and you will need enough space at home to roll out a mat and bring a block/thick book or pillow. If you’ve never had an online meeting before you will be able to see and chat to me and the others in the class and I will be able to see you. We will have a bit of extra time at the start and end of class to say hello and catch up. Cats, dogs and children are welcome to join in with you, feel free to rock up in your PJ’s.

I am suggesting a £20 donation for the four week block as this is the first time I have taught online but if you are financially struggling please simply pay whatever you can.

If you would like to book a space please message me with your email address and I will send out details to you the day before the class starts. Payment is via bank transfer, Paypal or cash if you’re local (as long as you give it to me at arm’s length!). Top Tops – Scottish Women’s Walking Group event series @ Girls on Hills
Apr 3 @ 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

‘Top Tops’ is a discounted guided hill-walking event developed by Girls on Hills Ltd in collaboration with the Scottish Women’s Walking Group. Each event will visit a different ‘doable’ mountain or hill, selected for having fantastic views and a wild feel (i.e great walks that offer real ‘bang for your buck’ in the mountains!)

These professionally guided hikes are also the perfect opportunity to seek advice from an expert or voice any questions you might have, so that you can build mountain skills and grow your confidence as you go!

Some of our summits will be ‘amenable’ Munros while others will be smaller hills or hidden gems that never fail to impress. Events will take place on alternate months and in a variety of locations across the Scottish Highlands – join us if you can!

Depending on the objective, you will be guided by a Summer Mountain Leader/British Athletics qualified female guide, with extensive experience mountaineering/hill-waking in the Scottish Mountains. Our goal is to empower women with the skills and confidence neccessary to ‘take the reigns’ when hiking in groups or to explore the mountains independently.

No previous experience is necessary but a good basic level of fitness is required. An equipment list will be provided to all ladies booking with Girls on Hills.

Girls on Hills is a ‘no-frills’ experience – we don’t include food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own to suit travel logistics or budget. We recommend lift-sharing within the Scottish Women’s Walking Group wherever possible.

We pride ourselves on being ‘approachable and relatable’, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns.

We look forward to showing you our ‘top tops’ and inspiring you to find your own…

* This event requires a minimum of 4 places booked to go ahead. In the event of cancellation, all parties will be refunded in full.
