Welcome to lochaber - things to do

ice factor

Welcome to Lochaber You will be spoilt for choice for Things to do in Lochaber and Fort William! Imagine your ideal adventure playground with activities, challenges and surprises around every corner. Now imagine the playground covers 2,000 square miles. You have just pictured Lochaber and Fort William.

Lochaber is also home to the tallest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis, which provides walks, ice climbs, rock climbs and scrambles for people of all different abilities. Ben Nevis’s climate can often be cloudy and cool, so it is important to bring appropriate clothing and equipment if you’re hoping to get to the summit. Guides are also available for walking on Ben Nevis and lots of other mountain walks in the area.

For the energetic there’s white-water raftingmountain biking to skiing, and more leisurely pursuits like golf & fishing, there’s so much for you to choose from!

With some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, Lochaber is a great place for scenic walks and to visit historic landmarks such as Old Inverlochy Castle or the Commando Memorial. Moreover, the more pop-culturally aware should not be able to resist a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, which travels over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct made even more iconic after appearing in four Harry Potter films carrying the beloved Hogwarts Express.

For Outlander fans a visit to Fort William museum is esencial – Fans of the Outlander books and TV series are making our Museum a ‘must see’ destination to learn more about the world of the Jacobites that Claire Randall found herself sharing with Jamie Fraser in 1743.  We are pleased about that and know we can give them an excellent insight.  As a guide we have  produced this Outlander leaflet.

Salomon Ring of Steall Skyrace Official Recce @ Ice Factor
Aug 10 @ 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
Salomon Ring of Steall Skyrace Official Recce @ Ice Factor | Kinlochleven | United Kingdom

Girls on Hills Ltd is the exclusive and recommended recce provider for Skyline Scotland. We are delighted to offer this official guided recce day for the Salomon Ring of Steall Skyrace™.

The recce is open to both men and women, and will be led by a professionally qualified running guide who also has first-hand experience of the event. You can therefore be assured of a safe, high quality experience with someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the event and the race route. Your guided recce will be Summer Mountain Leader qulaifies as a mimumim and there will be a maximum group ratio of 1:6

You do not need to have a race entry to participate in this event, but you do need an appropriate (high level) of hill fitness.
The day will start and finish at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven, and follow the epic race route in full over one exhilarating day: www.skylinescotland.com/ring-of-steall-skyrace/information/#displayTheRoute

The group will meet at 08:30 outside the Ice Factor and set off after a quick kit-check. The event will allow you to recce the technical sections of the race route and size-up the magnitude of the undertaking to inform race-day pacing and strategy. It will also enable you to get first-hand experience of how you are moving relative to the cut-off at CP5 in Glen Nevis. The group will finish back at the Ice Factor in order to give you an opportunity to satisfy cake and caffeine cravings!

PLEASE NOTE:
The recce is not a race, and the intention is to travel at a speed which is comfortable for the group, with time allowed for chatting with each other and the guide. Your expectation should be brisk uphill walking, jogging on the flats and downhill running. You’ll need to come prepared for a big day in the hills with your own clothing, equipment and food.

The group leader has the discretion to change the route followed (like switching to the ‘classic’ route, which is shorter with an alternative start, or official race bad weather route), should conditions dictate.

Accommodation and food is not included.
You will be asked to read and sign a disclaimer before commencement of the day.
For more information on the race and to enter visit: www.skylinescotland.com/ring-of-steall-skyrace

Ape House // Knoydart @ Knoydart Community Hall
Aug 15 @ 7:30 pm – 11:30 pm
Ape House // Knoydart @ Knoydart Community Hall | Inverie | United Kingdom

Ape House’ is a Glasgow-based trio specialising
in contemporary traditional music, delivered in a raw, energetic style. Brought together by local sessions, its members had the opportunity to blend styles and influences over several months before formally becoming a band.

Craig Harrison is a fiddler from Co. Clare,
Ireland. Immersed in Clare’s rich culture from a young age, Craig competed at many fleadhanna cheoil throughout his teens. He moved to Glasgow in 2016 in order to study mathematics and since then, he has become increasingly involved in the Glasgow scene and enhanced his Clare fiddle style.

Lachie Robinson grew up surrounded by music,
particularly Folk song and Highland cèilidh traditions. His musical ear was developed further through local Fèisean, where he learned guitar. Meanwhile, listening to genre-bending artists such as Shooglenify, Martyn Bennet and The Poozies nurtured an eclectic
sense of style. Lachie values experimentation and musical curiosity above all, furthering his craft through a BMus in Traditional Music at the RCS.

Wallace Calvert began learning both classical
and traditional music on cello. His passion grew as he participated in various youth projects, taught himself other instruments including concertina, and eventually went on to study traditional music at the RCS. Wallace has become a versatile multi-instrumentalist,
seeking to refine his skills and sensitive playing style through the exploration of Irish, Scottish, Northumbrian, and other traditional folk repertoire.

Ape House creates a fresh, lively and full
sound. Their current focus is upgrading their repertoire with refined arrangements and member-composed tunes.
