At this hands-on one day workshop you will get to grips with the tools, techniques and processes of green woodworking and rustic furniture making whether it’s all new to you or you’ve done it before.
Guided by the Wood Knoydart team you will craft your own piece of furniture from green roundwood and a precut top using a side axe, drawknife, tenon cutter, drill, japanese saw, wood carving knives and other tools. Working outside at Knoydart Forest Trust’s forest workshop in Inverie you will be immersed in the fabric of our community woodland.
The workshop will start at 10am and run to around 4pm. Tea, coffee and snacks will be on offer. We ask all participants to bring lunch and wear warm working clothes and suitable footwear.

We will examine swarming theories in detail, including triggers and influences within the nest and the behaviour of honeybees in the lead up to swarming, on issue of a swarm, selection and re-locating to a new nest site and back in the parent colony. To have any chance of controlling swarms an understanding of what is happening in the hive is essential otherwise it will be a complete mystery to you. We will cover swarm prevention techniques and compare and practice all of the main swarm control methods – Pagden, Demaree, nucleus method, shook swarm, etc. We also consider efficient and effective approaches to collecting swarms including the use of bait hives and personal and public safety. The course is classroom-based and does not use live colonies allowing us to practice specific manipulations without any distractions.

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES:
There’s a lot more to the birds we encounter on a day in the hills than just “Little Brown Jobs”. Join Alex on a guided walk and learn about the types of bird present in our hills, moorlands and mountains.
This workshop will cover:
- Methods to identify birds common to upland environments, namely by sight and sound
- How different habitats influence what species we might see and where
- The impact of seasonality on birds
- Conservation issues surrounding our feathered friends.
This workshop is orientated towards anyone operating in the upland environment under a professional leadership context; award holders and trainees alike. However, it is also suitable for those wishing to simply increase their own understanding of birds for personal enjoyment.
We will be out for around 4 hours. An ‘aide memoire’ and other learning resources will be distributed electronically after the event. This workshop is eligible for MTA, AMI and BAIML CPD points
