Women’s Backcountry & Freeride Performance Clinic
Apr 4 @ 9:00 am – Apr 5 @ 4:00 pm

Join us to experience 2 days of ski touring in Scotland with BASI ISTD top qualified instructor and keen backcountry explorer Amy Warwick.

Amy spends half of her winter teaching all levels of skiing in the French Alps and the other half in Aviemore, Scotland exploring the Cairngorms with ski touring groups with British Backcountry and Glenmore Lodge. Amy rides for Black Crows, Scarpa and Panda Optics and has featured in a couple of films showcasing the Scottish backcountry and the freeride opportunities that the Scottish mountains offer. When she is not out hunting down the next powder run she is a keen fell runner and yoga enthusiast and runs skiing and yoga retreats during the winter with her own company Yoyosno. You can follow her adventures on instagram @amywhereoutthere
Are you looking to gain more ski touring experience and learn how to tackle more challenging terrain in the Scottish backcountry? Looking to spend a day out in the mountains with a group of like minded ladies? Ready to laugh out loud, push your comfort zone and learn in a friendly environment?

This two day course will involve skinning and skiing in Scotland’s unpredictable but ultimately incredible terrain with a focus on scouting out steeper slopes and learning tactics and technique for improving your ski performance. Drawing on Amy’s competitive freeride experience you will explore line choice and use of terrain to open up options for more creative and exciting skiing. With lots of top tips for uphill and downhill technique, Amy will guide you through ski touring days from Glencoe mountain resort and introduce you to the wilds of Scotland’s winter wonderland.

All the key skills will be covered on the move and the day could involve multiple ascents and descents depending on conditions covering up to 1,000 – 1,500m vertical each day depending on conditions. Therefor this course would suit skiers who are comfortable climbing multiple munros on a day of hillwalking. During descents skiers will learn tactics for tackling the current snow conditions and hopefully enjoy some dreamy turns in the Scottish mountains. If the weather deteriorates during the day we may focus on a snow and avalanche skills session in sheltered terrain.

Day 1: A reminder of equipment and skills for uphill skiing (skinning efficiently, kick turns and route choice). We may begin in Glencoe resort and use uplift to warm up our skiing before dropping into the back of the resort to tackle some more remote terrain. We may aim for two or three short climbs and descents or use the resort for improving technique for steeper slopes, learning how to jump around, how to approach easy rock drops and transitions and generally learning how to make your ski descents more playful.

Day 2: A longer journey day putting into practice what was learned on day one. The aim would be to seek out the best conditions possible on the day, we may venture towards Stob Coire Nan Lochan and the Bidean nam Bean range if conditions allow.

Pre-requisites: You will need to be confident getting down a black run and have a decent level of fitness. You will need some prior experience of ski touring. We will look to improve our ski technique and may be skiing on slopes between 30 and 40 degrees but only if the snow and avalanche conditions are favourable. You should be happy to ski in unpredictable and changeable snow, although tactics to help tackle this will be covered in the course.

Equipment: Ski touring skis, skins and avalanche kit can be provided but you will need to bring your own ski boots and poles. Please let us know on the sign up form your equipment requirements in advance including the size of your ski boots (so bindings can be adjusted should you want to hire)

Skis with ski touring bindings

Ski boots that are fitted to the bindings

Each class will last one hour and you will need enough space at home to roll out a mat and bring a block/thick book or pillow. If you’ve never had an online meeting before you will be able to see and chat to me and the others in the class and I will be able to see you. We will have a bit of extra time at the start and end of class to say hello and catch up. Cats, dogs and children are welcome to join in with you, feel free to rock up in your PJ’s.

I am suggesting a £20 donation for the four week block as this is the first time I have taught online but if you are financially struggling please simply pay whatever you can.

If you would like to book a space please message me with your email address and I will send out details to you the day before the class starts. Payment is via bank transfer, Paypal or cash if you’re local (as long as you give it to me at arm’s length!).
